New Zealand Team Leader Matthew Scarlett has been leading the charge across the ditch for our provision of stormwater assets since 2021.
Taking our ‘Joy in Water’ creed in his stride, his work developing our product range for NZ markets has seen approvals for Atlan products in key regions – including Auckland, Christchurch and Waikato.
What excites you about working for Atlan?
The team is a lot of fun. Everyone takes their job seriously but refuse to take themselves too seriously. I appreciate that we wake up and go to work making a difference to New Zealand’s pristine waterways. Our waterways and beaches are known worldwide – and our job is to make them a bit better, every day.
Why is stormwater infrastructure integral to New Zealand’s future?
If we want a clean and prosperous future for our kids, we must protect our water – and Atlan’s Joy in Water message rings particularly true in New Zealand.
There is a Maori saying here that is:
‘Ka ora te wai, ka ora te whenua, ka ora nga tangata’ which translates to ‘If the water is healthy, the land is healthy, the people are healthy’. This is absolutely true.
How is Atlan improving stormwater design for the local market?
I appreciate Atlan’s commitment to R&D – and we do more research than any other stormwater treatment company that I know of in the southern hemisphere. Our products are world leading – and being at the cutting edge is a game-changer.
We go to work each morning and we help local councils meet their stormwater quality requirements and create designs that meet site specifications for civil engineers to comply with council standards.
A key point of difference for Atlan in the NZ marketplace is that everything we sell is manufactured by Atlan – it’s a local, high-performance product that helps keep delivery and pricing under control.
Which standout projects have you been a part of?
We have not long supplied the largest ever oily water separator ever made in NZ as part of a comprehensive treatment train solution for stormwater quality.
This flagship project saw us design, install and manufacture secondary treatment assets to hold 130,000 litres of hydrocarbon spill with stormwater flowrates of 70l/sec. This was part of a treatment train as immediately downstream was a vault full of AtlanFilters for treating copper, zinc and lead as well as nutrient and fine TSS.
What are your passions outside of work?
In my free time I’ll be found constantly doing maintenance to a 100-year-old house but whenever I can extract myself from that my favourite thing to do is to head down to the beach with the family – watching the kids happily splash about is my version of Joy in Water.
