Atlan Stormwater were the major sponsor of Stormwater Shepherds’ latest clean-up at Plumpton Park, Sydney, alongside co-hosts Blacktown City Council. With an inspiring turnout, over forty children participated in the day’s activities, which taught our local volunteer ‘Stormies’ the importance of stormwater and wetland ecology.
Each participant learned about capturing pollution with stormwater treatment devices through the creation of model gross pollutant traps, gained hands-on experience with Atlan’s Floating Treatment Wetlands technology, and took a bird’s-eye view of the ways stormwater flows impact urban areas.
Developed in 1993 on the Cumberland Plains of West Sydney, Plumpton Park serves the local community by enhancing flood mitigation, improving water quality, and providing habitat for local wildlife.
Today, the park’s linear wetland is thriving, with healthy vegetation and an abundance of waterbirds. It offers a valuable recreational space for the community, serving as a conservation reserve for remnant Cumberland Plain open woodland — a biodiverse ecosystem of eucalyptus trees, native grasses, and a wide variety of local flora and fauna.
As Zero Pollution Ambassadors, Stormwater Shepherds is committed to restoring health to our waterways and teaching communities about the ways we can stop plastic and urban pollution.
The Plumpton Park clean-up event was an inspiring opportunity to teach the next generation to care for their local waterways and catchments, helping to raise awareness about the vital role of stormwater treatment in protecting our environment.
