Can stormwater detention tanks be used for stormwater harvesting?

Yes. Our stormwater detention range, including MegaVault, AtlanVault, AtlanCube, and AtlanChamber, can be custom-installed with liners and sealants to retain stormwater for reuse applications.

Stormwater detention systems temporarily store stormwater to slow incoming flows and prevent flooding. Stormwater harvesting involves storing this water over longer periods for on-site use, such as irrigation, toilet flushing, gardening, and vehicle wash bays.

The key difference between these systems is storage time – with detention systems designed to empty out between rainfall events to preserve their ability to manage incoming flows, while reuse systems hold it for long-term use. While the applications of these systems have inherent differences, their structure, design, and configurations are similar.

Compartmentalised tank configurations with dedicated detention and retention volumes are also available to provide dual stormwater management capabilities within a single tank. Atlan Stormwater’s range of modular OSD & retention solutions are regularly installed with volumes ranging up to 10,000,000 litres (10 megalitres). These solutions can be scaled further with the capability to engineer larger arrays of modules in site-specific configurations to meet high-volume project requirements.

These dual systems provide the benefits of both types of infrastructure. They reduce peak stormwater flows to prevent flooding, while also providing a sustainable, supplementary water source for stormwater reuse.

This dual approach to stormwater management futureproofs local communities. By integrating these systems, we can develop stormwater systems that enhance green ratings and lower flood risk.

Modern approaches to stormwater management support resilient communities and future-proof our urban environment against extreme weather and local climatic conditions.
