During our ALDE Conference presentation, Vic & Tas General Manager Kurt Jensen explored ways we can adopt modern stormwater solutions to increase project land yield and unlock additional space for our growing urban communities.
As communities become denser and developable land becomes increasingly valuable, traditional stormwater assets can consume space that could otherwise be used for homes, open space and community amenities.
Investigating alternatives to conventional stormwater infrastructure, such as bioretention basins, throughout his presentation – the underlying question when thinking about stormwater design is simple. Are we doing it because it’s right, or because it’s what we did last time?
Bridging the Gap Between Economics & Environment

The case studies Kurt presented showcased our design assistance and the resulting stormwater solutions that helped conserve developable space – these included Alamora Estate in Tarneit and Lifestyle Phillip Island in Cowes.
At Alamora Estate in Tarneit, developmental constraints and cultural heritage objectives prevented construction of a planned wetland – a significant hurdle to the project. Working with Creo Civil, the project team used a Flowceptor to replace the sediment pond function, complemented by Floating Treatment Wetlands for tertiary treatment.
The solution delivered best-practice stormwater treatment within the existing footprint. Importantly, it conserved land yield across the project, helping to unlock ten stages of development while retaining compatibility for future site works and wetland spaces.
At Lifestyle Phillip Island, a 3.1 ML underground detention and irrigation reuse system was combined with Vortceptor and FlowFilter treatment train. By replacing traditional above-ground assets, the project returned 3,500 m² of developable land, enough for 12 additional lots.
These projects show what’s possible when we challenge conventional design decisions and explore alternative strategies such as modular underground assets and high-performance treatment devices.
