Floating Treatment Wetlands

Which plants are suitable for growing in Floating Treatment Wetlands?

Plant selection for Floating Treatment Wetlands (FTWs) is very similar to that of a traditional constructed wetland. These plant selections can mirror the species present in natural waterway ecosystems, be customised with native flora to support biodiversity, or include specific plant species for high-performance stormwater treatment outcomes.

In stormwater treatment applications, wetland grasses, sedges, and herbs are most suitable, with a core species list provided below. Small shrubs can be accommodated, but caution should be paid to shifting the centre of gravity too high. Tall trees greatly increase the risk of structural instability.

Providing refuge for local species such as frogs, birds, turtles, and fish, the plants of FTWs can also be selected to promote the creation of local habitat. By including native flora species, biodiversity and compatibility with local environments can be conserved.

This ability to tailor the plant selection of FTWs for local regions allows these systems to meet diverse environmental requirements and facilitate a wide range of community outcomes, whether the priority is beautification, sustainability, habitat creation, reduced maintenance costs, or water quality.

However, care should be taken when choosing plants to avoid invasive species, as these may outcompete local flora or inhibit the growth of the other selected species.
