FlowFilter: Our First Canadian Environmental Technology Verification

We are pleased to announce the Atlan FlowFilter’s Canadian Environmental Technology Verification (ETV), providing independent verification of the performance of the device and its pollution removal capabilities – further supporting the deployment of Atlan’s stormwater treatment assets in North America.

The Atlan FlowFilter® is a proprietary cartridge-based stormwater treatment ideal for improving water quality in stormwater treatment scenarios. This device features a condensed footprint design, flexible filter cartridge configurations, and modular design.

Incorporating a sedimentation sump and multiple replaceable filter cartridges configured within the treatment chamber, FlowFilter is a scalable solution that can be designed to meet a wide range of flow rates and stormwater treatment requirements.

Joining FlowFilter’s existing SQIDEP-verification and TAPE designation, the ETV was conducted by Globe Performance Solutions in alignment with the principles and framework of ISO 14034:2016 – Environmental Management – Environmental Technology Verification (ETV).

The verification of this system involved an independent assessment of the available evidence supporting the performance of the FlowFilter for the treatment of urban stormwater runoff. The assessment focused on the system’s ability to reduce suspended solids, nutrients, metals, and gross pollutants under defined operating conditions.

In defined operating conditions, the Atlan FlowFilter® demonstrated pollution removal ranges of the following –

  • Total Suspended Solids (TSS): 90% to 98%
  • Total Phosphorus (TP): 70% to 90%
  • Total Nitrogen (TN): 40% to 50%
  • Lead (Pb): 80% to 90%
  • Zinc (Zn): 40% to 60%

FlowFilter's ETV: Exploring the Benefits of Verified Devices

Introduced in Canada in 1997, the ETV framework is an industry-leading verification process. It supports users, developers, regulators and project stakeholders in making informed decisions about the purchase, procurement, application and regulation of innovative sustainable technologies.

Building vendor credibility and buyer confidence, these insights provide assurance that performance claims are valid and align with data demonstrated through high-quality, independent testing.

For stormwater treatment devices, verification ensures that the data supporting device specifications, such as pollution removal rates and water quality improvement capabilities, are firmly established through rigorous research and development.

Improving market recognition, Environmental Technology Verification expedites permitting and approvals for the implementation of environmental technology – paving the way for FlowFilter to be used in stormwater applications across Canada.

We believe clean waterways are a right, not a privilege. At Atlan Stormwater, we are committed to verifying the performance of our stormwater range to drive best practice engineering and to support project sustainability and value generation through environmental compliance.

The research, development and testing of stormwater devices is paramount to delivering better outcomes for our shared lakes, rivers, and seas – by capturing pollution in our urban catchments to prevent its conveyance to downstream habitats. Together, we can protect Joy in Water for future generations.
