\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tLocated just four kilometres from both Sydney\u2019s central business district and Bondi Junction, Zetland has quickly risen as a popular\u00a0suburb for young professionals and international students to rent or invest in property. The suburb is part of\u00a0the\u00a0Green Square<\/a>\u00a0urban renewal\u00a0district,\u00a0where new high-density mixed residential blocks are\u00a0being\u00a0built\u00a0beside older industrial estates.\n\nWhile awash with development, Zetland\u00a0does\u00a0present a considerable challenge for contractors\u00a0–\u00a0flooding<\/a>.\u00a0The suburb sits on top of what used to be Waterloo Swamp, which was part of a chain of wetlands that led to Botany Bay.\u00a0\u00a0In other words, Zetland was built on what was once a natural floodplain. Since its settlement\u00a0200 years ago<\/a>, residents of the low-lying suburb have had to contend with flooding on a regular basis.\n\nFlooding considerations aside, Zetland now plays a key role in Green Square\u2019s\u00a0stormwater recycling scheme<\/a>.\u00a0The scheme is designed to help reduce the entire district\u2019s demand on its limited potable water supply. The whole process starts in Zetland, where a 2km storm drain was installed to harvest up to 320 million litres of stormwater. The stormwater is\u00a0fed\u00a0into a nearby\u00a0treatment plant\u00a0located\u00a0the former South Sydney Hospital. The treated stormwater is then\u00a0piped\u00a0back to Green Square\u00a0where it\u2019s used in\u00a0washing machines, flushing toilets, and maintaining parks and gardens.\n\nGiven\u00a0Zetland\u2019s flooding challenges and key role in\u00a0Green Square\u2019s stormwater recycling scheme, developers need to implement stormwater management methods that prioritise both flood mitigation and\u00a0improved water quality.\n\nOur client for this project recognised Zetland\u2019s unique opportunities for implementing innovative stormwater treatment technology.
