The transport sector is one of Australia\u2019s leading sources of\u00a0green house\u00a0gas. It accounts for\u00a018.9%<\/a>\u00a0of the country\u2019s\u00a0emissions, and\u00a0is still showing an upward trend.\u00a0One of the main strategies to curb the sector\u2019s carbon footprint is to encourage usage of public transport. However,\u00a08 out of 10 Australians\u00a0still\u00a0use cars\u00a0to travel to work and school, according to\u00a0a Climate\u00a0Council\u00a0report<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If more people are going to be persuaded to use public transport more often,\u00a0our\u00a0mass transit systems need to be upgraded.\u00a0In Canberra, the ACT Government is pushing major updates in their\u00a0public transport network. This includes 692 extra bus services\u00a0each weekday\u2014providing citizens with more direct routes and more frequent services.<\/p>\n

ACT plans to increase bus services by 17.5%<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Part of ACT\u2019s\u00a0network update is a new bus layover in Turner, which can accommodate 25 buses at a time. The new facility will be planted with approximately\u00a025 trees for\u00a0landscaping, and\u00a0will also provide widened footpaths to accommodate foot and bicycle traffic to\u00a0Australian National University.<\/p>\n

The facility has also been fitted with a stormwater detention system by SPEL. With a capacity of over 2 million litres, the SPELChamber installation will reduce the impact and frequency of flooding on site. As part of the stormwater treatment train, the SPELChamber is a great solution for promoting water sensitive urban design.<\/p>\n

With its open bottom design, the SPELChamber harnesses the soil\u2019s natural properties in capturing and breaking down pollutants carried by stormwater runoff. It also allows for clean water to seep into the ground, recharging the groundwater and maintaining base flows to streams, ponds, lakes, or wetlands.<\/p>\n
