Atlan's Early Days (1960s)<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In the beginning, the company’s main product line was greatly influenced by Philip V. Pocock, Atlan’s first chairman. Philip’s vocation had been in building horse drawn milk floats during World War II, and playing to his strengths, Philip would sway Atlan into producing carbs and roofs for these vehicles later on.<\/p>

After the war, Britain has experienced a shortage in cart horses. This was a big problem for the dairy industry, which relied on horse-drawn carts to distribute milk door to door. With a knack for engineering solutions, Philip invented the electric milk float in 1947.<\/p>

Ahead of their time, these iconic floats were cutting-edge technology. With around 40,000 milkmen delivering to 18 million British homes, the trucks made light work of each driver’s 450 odd daily deliveries. Compact and highly manoeuverable they navigated the narrow British streets with eases, and their low cost of manufacture saw the UK dairy industry finally begin to turn a profit.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

From horse-drawn to electric powered milk floats\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

At first, t<\/span>he float\u2019s bodywork was\u00a0<\/span>constructed<\/span>\u00a0using aluminium. But this was eventually replaced by\u00a0<\/span>hand-<\/span>moulded fibreglass<\/span>\u2014<\/span>an\u00a0<\/span>even lighter\u00a0<\/span>material\u00a0<\/span>with lower production costs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In 1963, Atlan began in earnest with the completion of our first factory. Such was our success<\/span>\u00a0in manufacturing fibreglass\u00a0<\/span>bodies for the electric milk floats, that three bays were added in 1970. Three years after that, we needed to add yet another three bays to the annex and established a second site.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Atlan diversified its operations i<\/span>n tune with B<\/span>ritain\u2019s increased urbanisation. The<\/span>re was enormous business potential in fabricating reinforced plastics for industrial and commercial use.<\/span> Atlan manufactured claddings for buildings, <\/span>bridge fascia systems (patented),\u00a0<\/span>manhole shutters, tanks, and even insulated jam <\/span>containers.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In 1975<\/span>,<\/span> we produced the first Atlan Septic Tank, which interestingly looked a bit like an onion. <\/span>Two years later, the same product earned Atlan its first <\/span>Agreement<\/span>\u00a0Certificate<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>a document<\/span> proving the product\u2019s fitness and <\/span>strict\u00a0<\/span>compliance to UK<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>building regulations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Atlan Becomes A Player in the Stormwater Industry (1980s-1990s)<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The\u00a0<\/span>1980s-90s\u00a0<\/span>were a time\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0un<\/span>restrain<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>optimism\u00a0<\/span>for<\/span>\u00a0technology.<\/span>\u00a0The rise of IBM\u2019s personal computer and Apple\u2019s \u2018Mac\u2019 signalled a digital revolution that would change the face of manufacturing<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

It was during this time that Atlan saw a r<\/span>ise in demand for\u00a0<\/span>its\u00a0<\/span>fibreglass stormwater tanks.<\/span>\u00a0To<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>capitalise on the opportunity<\/span>, the<\/span>\u00a0company\u00a0<\/span>optimised production by\u00a0<\/span>investing in computerised robotic moulding machines.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Atlan <\/span>also\u00a0<\/span>became a specialist in filament wound<\/span>\u00a0pressure vessels<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Filament winding is a processing technique for fabricating cylindrical structures using composite materials. Using this technique has\u00a0<\/span>made Atlan\u2019s underground tanks fast to produce at low cost.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Over the past two decades\u00a0<\/span>we\u2019ve<\/span>\u00a0seen an accelerated evolution in stormwater technology and design thinking.\u00a0<\/span>Governments and whole industries have also implemented more stringent standards in pollution control and environmental health and safety.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In tune<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>with the times, Atlan has grown beyond its product-oriented business. While <\/span>our\u00a0<\/span>place in the stormwater industry is\u00a0<\/span>firmly rooted in manufacturing, we recognise our extended responsibility to the public to drive\u00a0<\/span>better water quality<\/span>\u00a0overall.\u00a0<\/span>We<\/span>\u00a0act on thi<\/span>s responsibility by promoting sustainable solutions for stormwater management and water sensitive urban design.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
